Rigid Closures

As a leading supplier of caps and closures for the healthcare, automotive, household chemical, beauty and personal care markets, we have decided to put together a road map for all the different styles and configurations produced at Berlin Packaging UK.

Our rigid caps and closures fall into six categories with hundreds of styles to choose from. We also produce bespoke closures for larger projects and offer a dosing cap that boasts several benefits for this current market climate.

Rigid Closure Types

  1. Disc Top Caps
  2. Flip Top Caps
  3. Over Caps
  4. Screw Caps
  5. Pull Top Caps
  6. Custom Caps.

Each distinctive closure has a different design, fits a wide range of recyclable plastic bottles, and offers a slightly different purpose. A disc top cap is used for thicker liquids, like; soaps, shampoo, hand-body and face creams, serums and gels. Over caps protect the caps and their contents, screw caps are safe and secure and flip-top caps are also used for a wide range of beauty products.

Overall, rigid closures are easy to use from a consumer perspective because it keeps the liquid contents in the bottle; safe, fresh, secure, easy to use and simple to store.

Rigid Closure Trends

With the past 12 months being extremely shakey for brands worldwide, the coronavirus pandemic has caused a rise in reliable products. Consumers needed hand sanitisers, antibacterial products and cleaning solutions to help keep vulnerable people safe. Our team witnessed a 500x growth over an 18 month period and worked closely with our import and export contacts to fulfil the explosion of supply and demand.

Rigid bottle caps and closures were used for sanitisation on a substantial commercial and domestic scale. However, we pushed through and delivered for all our small and large clients. We have adapted for long term growth and acquired a new position in the caps and closures supply chain.

Dispensing With Purpose

Rigid closures help to apply liquid products with ease of control. There are a few variables that make each bottle cap the perfect tool for the job;

Diameter and Viscosity
The measurement of the dispensing hole (diameter of the opening cap) has been tested to work with thousands of products. The key to this success is finding the average viscosity and applying the best-suited cap for dispensing. The higher the viscosity – the larger the diameter of the hole needs to be. A thick gel, for example, would require a larger dispensing diameter.

Volume and Pressure
The size of the bottle also plays a role in the dispensing caps and closure products. Combining volume with the pressure applied by the consumer’s hand – creates output and a suction. The larger the bottle, the higher the output and suction. A smaller bottle will have a lower output and suction effect. This is why it’s crucial to test the product with different caps and bottle sizes.

These variables can help the consumer with application, cleanliness and storage. The idea is to have an effortless product with good consumer feedback.

Rigid Closure Options

We offer a range of options with each closure type; however, this can be complicated when understanding bottleneck, width/height and cap fitments. This is why we have implemented a ‘Filter Button’ on each product category (static page on our website) situated on the top left-hand side of each product category page.

Tube Closures

Our new range of flexible tube closures works with the collection of flexible Monolayer, Biopolymer and Laminated tubes. These are perfect for a wide range of products, including creams, lotions, gels, shampoo and other skincare products. Flexible tubes have several capacities and come with a range of decoration options. These extruded tubes can be made with LDPE or a PE mix of LDPE & HDPE. This makes them fully recyclable.

The tamper-evident band and sleave offer the consumer peace of mind before purchase. This tells the buyer that the product has not been opened, damaged, or used in any way. Flip-top caps ensure the product is kept fresh and clean after use and offers a stylish design for high-end cosmetic products. The screw caps are easy to use, help store the tubes in the correct position and look seamless as a product offering.

Continuous Thread

Berlin Packaging UK offers a selection of continuous thread closures that work with PET and HDPE bottles from our range. Screw caps were originally an internal thread design. A glass bottle/jar with an internal screw-thread immediately below a gasket seat, having a bevelled seat, was patented by Hyman (Himan) Frank of the William Frank & Sons, Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA. He was awarded patent US 130208 A on August 6, 1872.

The continuous thread cap is secure, watertight and can be recycled to fit into the circular economy. Our range is available in different sizes, colours, smooth, ribbed and transparent designs.

The Future Of Rigid Closures

The UK Government will be introducing a plastic tax for commercial and domestic products, including rigid closures. This will be implemented by 2022 and incentivise manufacturers to re-use plastic waste products from the circular economy. In the plastic industry, plastic waste that can be ‘re-used’ is called PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled). New caps and closures will need to contain at least 30% PCR to avoid the new plastic tax on import and export costs.

As we are a forward-thinking company, our team at Berlin Packaging UK welcome the change and thinks it’s a fantastic move to change the landscape and ideology of the carbon footprint we produce as a civilisation.
